Connect a current source ( internal resistance very high ) to the diode in such polarity as the diode conduct in forward direction. Connect a voltage meter across the diode (so that it reads positive if connects a analouge meter). The reading you are getting is the forward voltage. In normal diodes available in the market will have a forwrd voltage of the range 0.5v to 0.9v

You need to apply an external voltage across the diode. The negative terminal must be connected to the N type material.
