If you believe that you are addicted to a substance or an activity (such as gambling, shopping or relationships), then there are several ways to address the addiction. What's important is that you allow yourself to have one of these forms of support to deal with an addiction. Addiction is much harder to get a handle on alone.

1) Seek formal treatment. There are several kinds of treatment that a person with an addictive disease can benefit from. Some people require a more intensive treatment than others. It is important that a person with an addiction has a full evaluation to determine which level of treatment is appropriate. Here are some examples of types of treatment that are available (some will be covered by insurance, some will not).

  • Seeing a mental health therapist (Psychologist, Social Worker, Counselor)
  • Getting outpatient therapy at a chemical dependency clinic
  • Participating in an intensive outpatient day program at a chemical dependency clinic
  • Going to a 28 day residential program (a "rehab")
  • Going to a 90 day residential program
2) Find a 12-step meeting like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous or Overeater's Anonymous. They are easy to find with a quick Google search of your home town.

2) Find a 12-step meeting like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous or Overeater's Anonymous. They are easy to find with a quick Google search of your home town. These types are groups are based on the value of one recovering addict helping another. Many people resist attending this kind of recovery program. However, those who walk in the doors find a plan for living that costs nothing to attend.

3) Seek spiritual support for your recovery. Many faith communities have programs for those who are looking for help with their addiction. If you contact the Pastor, Priest, or Rabbi of a faith community, they are very likely to be able to point you toward help for your addiction. They may be willing to speak with you personally or set up an appointment with you.

What are some symptoms of food addiction in teenagers?

Addiction is addiction; it doesn't matter if it's a food addiction, or an addition to alcohol, prescription drugs, shopping, gambling, etc. The symptoms of addiction are the same. There are certain behaviors that are common among all addicts. There are a number of online sites that discuss the signs of addiction: http://addictions.about.com/od/howaddictionhappens/a/symptomslist.htm offers a nice overview AND specifically food addiction: http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/mental-health-food-addiction -- Keep in mind that it is very common for parents to experience a great deal of denial with regard to addiction in a minor child. Denial is far easier than actually dealing with the problem. While you can gently offer them information, there is nothing you can do to fix them or your nephew. He has to come to terms with the fact that there is a problem, then his parents must do the same before anyone can get help.
