How do you do an essay?

Okay it's simple if you follow our structure !

Think of SEEC (English) or SEEL (history)

The difference between the two is in English you give your personal view/ Comment whereas in History you Link the question back to the answer (no personal view)

Okay, let's start with English

Let say the question is : Describe an important event in your novel and explain what was difficult about them .

Okay now the essay starts with you describing the novel in a short few sentences ... also at the end of the paragraph add in what you are going to talk about (from the paragraph below you can tell that I'm going to talk about her disability, her brothers and her family life)

For Example: In the novel End of the Alphabet by Fleur Beale it tells a fictional story about a 14 year old girl named Ruby Yarrow. Ruby is the kind of person who hasn't learnt to say no. She slaves away 24/7 for her family getting her brothers ready for school, taking one of her younger brothers to school before she starts her day. When Ruby gets to school she is greeted by her friends and her best friend Tia who tells her she needs a "backbone" . Then school starts and it's twice as hard for Ruby because she can't read or write very well Because she has a learning disability . After school Ruby picks up one of her younger brothers, Davey. She then gets home to deal with Max one of her other brothers who treats her like a slave and on top of all of this she still has to entertain Davey while cooking dinner for six and doing her homework.

Now after all that we can start to answer the question!

You start with the first half (Describe an important event in your novel) of the question and you answer it!

In SEEC format

• S-statement- Make a general statement, for example: An event that interested me was when Ruby learnt Portuguese despite the fact that she had a learning disability.
• E- Expand- Expand on the statement, for example: It was easy for Ruby to want to learn the language because at the start she wanted to go to Brazil so that she could be like everyone else and everyone else would be in same position and not be able to read or write but the interesting thing was that ruby picked up the language in a short time just by talking to Maria and Cat in Portuguese.
• E- Evidence- Give Evidence from the book, for example: An example of this was when Ruby Learnt new words everyday when Maria picked up Cat, Maria and Ruby would talk in Portuguese " No we will speak Portuguese. It's the way to learn more words. You have to stretch yourself. I learnt the words for unfair, apology, support, splitting our family, strike and confused"
• C-Comment- say what you think and how you can relate to this, for example: I think that it would have been hard for anyone to learn a language and through out the book I felt rather proud of the character Ruby because even though people through the book told her she couldn't do thinks because of her learning disability. She proved them wrong and did them anyway.

Now the next half of the question (explain what was difficult about them .)

You do this in 2-3 parts depending on how many things you mentioned in your first paragraph !

1. Paragraph 1 is in SEEC format talking about the First point you made
2. Paragraph 2 is in SEEC format talking about the Second point you Made
3. Paragraph 3 (if you have one) is talking about the third point you made
4. Then the conclusion where you just wrap everything up ! (it's short)

In conclusion (Never do this--"In conclusion" is redundant in an essay. The essay is your conclusion.) I really enjoyed the novel. There were lots of interesting events, there were so many Characters with different personalities and so many important ideas that the author portrayed in the novel. The best thing about this novel for me was that most times I was able to relate to the characters or the situations they were in.

I think that the novel is an ideal read for me and it's one of those books you could just read over and over again.
