Your trunk light switch needs to be replaced. The switch is located in the latch assembly of the trunk lid. You do not need to replace the whole latch, just take it apart and take out the small black switch that has a metal lever coming off at about a 30 degree angle. You can buy a new one from the dealer for like $20 and fix the problem yourself. Do a search at VWvortex.com for more info.
Details of my problem:
When the metal lever is moved it comes in contact with the switch. The switch is normally closed, which means when nothing is pushing the switch, it completes the trunk light circuit and allows 12V to power the trunk light. When the trunk is closed, the switch is pressed and the circuit is open (light off). Mine was bad (tested with a multimeter) and had a resistance of 500 Ohms or so rather than a short when depressed (closed). This was stealing the voltage that was intended for the trunk light, so that the light only received 3-6V. A new switch had a zero resistance (short) across the terminals and operated properly (12V to the light).
Aside:
You may want to upgrade the trunk light while your at it. Grab some neon looking Cold Cathode light bars used for computer cases (run on 12V). I used white. I zip tied the light bars to the top of the inner trunck area, then and wired them to my stock light bulb socket. These things are much brighter and in a better position than the stock bulb, and can be had for $10 at Frys.
Could it be that you are just low on coolant?
It may be due to a bad alternator. If the alternator has a bad diode it will draw battery power when the car is off. Another possible draw is the trunk light. The trunk light works with a sensor that is mounted to the curved bar on the left side (drivers side) of the trunk. This sensor sometimes slides out of adjustment and keeps the trunk light on when the trunk is closed.
My 1993 seville, only the right half of the truck brake light works, how do I repair it ? Thank you Bruce
How do i get the trunk to close when it sometime works
I have a 97 volkswagon jetta gls 2.0 and three of my power windows do not work. Only the front passenger window works. How do I fix this problem.
it works your abs
It depends on the sizes of the wheel there out are Jettas with 15",16" wheels i have a Jetta and uses a 205/55/16 and it works perfect on any terrain.
If the light works, but only now and then, try taking the bulb out, cleaning up the base and the socket with some WD-40. If that doesn't help, you can try the same thing with the switch that operates the light, if it's something you can get at. Give it a good shot of WD-40.My car doesn't have a trunk light at all, so I'm sort of shooting in the dark here *pun intended*
Behind the driver's seat there is a trunk release that works with the ignition key.
