The short answer is no. There is no current way to manually update itunes. If the automatic update isn't working, uninstall itunes, and download the newest version off of the website.

Yes, any iPod Touch will work with your iTunes even if you had a 2nd generation working with iTunes before. You can register more than one iPod with iTunes.

I don't know what Bnjour is either but it's connected with iTunes. One day I was removing programs I dont use anymore to free up space and I deleted bonjour. Then all of a sudden my iTunes wouldn't work. From what I can remember, I uninstalled the iTunes that wasn't working and then restarted my CPU. Then I went and downloaded iTunes again and everything worked fine. I don't know why it's not working for you.
If you have windows, then you and I have had the same problem. I had just given up on Itunes for a while becuase I tried everything I could think of to fix it. I was searching the internet for solutions and one suggested uninstalling QuickTime. I did this and immediately tried Itunes and it came on with no difficulties. I have no idea why this works, but it does!
If iTunes is not working properly then simply uninstall it and reinstall it. This fix's the majority of issues. If the problem persists contact Apple.
i stops working.(maybe)
This denotes a problem related to connecting to the iTunes store. I'll assume you were working with your iPhone because that is the only time I've seen that error number. Contact apple and ask if there is a problem with the iTunes store or your iPhone's firmware.
