Some brake light switches are on the shaft that comes out of the brake booster(firewall) under the dash and connect to the pivoting lever where your brake pedal is. To change this type, you pull the spring loaded clip out of the clevis pin,(fat "t" nail), then pull the pin out. The shaft from the booster is forked and lifts away from the lever with switch, carefull to notice the plastic bushing and direction, slide the new switch in and reinstall on lever with pinn and clip. There is a lock tab on the connector.
Other types have a tab welded to the lever that simply make contact with the button on the switch. The switch is simply pushed into a self holding stay from the back side. This type is pushed into the holder all the way and when the brake pedal is pushed you'll hear a ratcheting noise and the switch depth is set automatically. put a stick against the seat to see if they are on and make sure they are off with pedal released.

The brake light switch is threaded into the master cylinder. Open the hood, look at the brake master cylinder, notice the brake light switch with wires connected. Have new one ready to install when you remove the old one to keep loss of brake fluid to a minimum.
