The brake light switch is located near the top of the brake pedal. When the pedal is depressed the switch is activated and sends current to the brake lights. To access the switch, the under dash panel needs to be removed.
Nonworking Brake LightsYes, it could be the brake light switch [either not properly adjusted, or defective], BUT there could be other causes:One of the several connector plugs in the brake light wiring could be disconnected.Any on of the conductors [wires] in the brake light circuit could be cut, broken, or disconnectedA ground wire could be cut, broken, or disconnected. At any one of the above connections, there could be a buildup of corrosion which cuts off the flow of electricity. There could be other causes which do not come to my mind at the moment.

Look under the rear of the truck on the left side frame rail. The wire for the back up lights is light green. The brake/turn signal wire on the left side is yellow. The brake/turn signal wire on the right side is dark green. Your taillights and bumper lights are a brown colored wire. You also have a black ground wire. I ; those are the wire colors for the rear lamps on my truck anyways. I own a similar Chevy truck. Good luck. I ran into one that may shed some light. The brake light switch harness get damaged from the poor position it is in. It is a real mother to get at too. Post your results. I had the same thing on my '91.It was a headlight switch
if turning and your car clicks, check cv axles. if going straight, check brake pads for looseness in caliper bracket, check rotors for thickness and runout(warpage), check brake hardware, and especially caliper bolts and bracket bolts.
When my jeep cherokee alternator went bad, the check engine light came on and I didnt have a clue what was going on until my volt guage was reading in the red zone. When I replaced my alternator, the light went off. So in my opinion i wouldnt consider the check engine light as a alternator light.
