I'll answer assuming you're using Windows based machines. The absolute easiest way is to buy a Router or Switch from a company like Linksys. A Router will handle outbound traffic, so you'll need that if you want to share broadband internet connectivity. Then you'll need a network connection for each computer you want to hook up. If the computers are close together, just run network cables to the router/switch, and set "Network Settings / TCP/IP settings to 'acquire an IP address automatically' ". That will get everyone on the network, and you could play games against each other, for example. If you want to share files, you need to right click on the folders or files you want to share, and click "properties" or "sharing" and open sharing to those files.

Use a Hub and the job is done...

Your ISP subscription will create only one IP address (unless you purchase more). Attaching multiple systems to your ISP modem using a hub or switch will create duplicate IP addresses on the network and nothing will work. The correct technique to get mom, dad, brother and sister to share one ISP subscription is to connect

modem---router---family computers

Each family computer will have an local LAN address (created by the router) and all systems may be used independently or simultaneously. As most routers available for home based systems are limited to FOUR lan connections, if you have more that four computers or need a fifth connection for a networked printer using IP, then just add a hub or switch:

modem---router--switch--extra devices

and the family computers can still connect directly to the router.

How do you install an application simultaneously on multiple computers?

On Microsoft Windows systems that are connected to a Domain Controller, Network Administrators may configure the Domain Controller to push applications to all computers in a certain scope (a group of computers, a group of users, or any reasonable combination thereof). In summary, to install applications on multiple computers at once in an Active Directory network, a Network Administrator needs to log into the Domain Controller, create a Group Policy Object that defines the scope (that is, group of users or computers it should apply to) that directs that computer to install the software when a user logs in. This is the most efficient way to install an application on multiple computers using only Microsoft technology. There are numerous third party applications available that can provide this sort of functionality on a local network without the need for a Domain Controller. These applications range from free to hundreds of dollars, and come with varying features and limitations. Should one decide to go this route, it is advisable that due diligence is done before purchasing or downloading a solution that may not work for your scenario. In either event, if the number of computers involved is less than the time it would take to configure a Domain Controller to push the installation, or installing third party software on all computers, then configuring a server to push the installers, it would more intuitive to simply install the software manually on all the computers involved.
