Custom made knives are produced by two basic methods: Grinding or Forging. First, a maker chooses a grade of steel that will perform the required job. Knives ae used for many different applications and the steel that is chosen should fit the particular application. See the related lnks for information on the proper knife steel selection.

The maker then grinder then uses some form of an abrasive grinder to shape the stainless steel or tool steel into a rough knife shape. Much thought goes into the design and feel of the knife. The abrasive grinder is fitted with varying grit belts to facilitate stock removal. In the forging method, the piece of steel is heated to its forging temperature of around 1800-1900F and the repeatedly hammered to the rough desired shape. Once the knife reaches it rough shape, then the blade goes into the heat treating. The blade is hardened, depending on the steel grade, between 1500-2100F. Then the blade is tempered to remove the stresses from heat treating and grinding. Tempering is normally performed between 350 and 1100F, again depending on the chosen grade of steel. Tempering will need to be performed 2-4 times for a minimum of 2 hours per temper. See the related links for more detailed heat treating instructions. Once the knife blade has been properly hardened, the blade will need to be ground to its finished shape. Final grinding is performed with fine abrasive grit belts and polished. The blade is fitted with some kind of handle materials, like wood, ivory or laminate, held in place with some type of pins. Brass, nickel silver and stainless steel are common choices. Once the handle material has been attached, the handle is shaped to conform to the user hand through the use of the abrasive belts. After the desired shape for the handle has been attained, the blade is then sharpenedd for use.

Or you could cut the shape out that you like, sharpen it, sand it (to polish it), put a handle on, and there you go, you've got a homemade knife.

thats... if you like it simple.
