Providing critique for a writer or artist can be a difficult process. You have to critically examine the piece in question, but not be so critical that you hurt the author's or artist's feelings.

Here are some guidelines:

  • Start with your overall impression - how did the work make you feel? what did you think the author or artist was trying to convey with this work?
  • Point out some positive things about the work - things you especially liked, or parts that worked well
  • Point out the parts that you feel need work - be specific! - say which part didn't work and why you feel that it didn't
  • End on a positive note by telling something else that you feel worked well, or by saying something like "I think it'll be easy for you to correct these parts and make them as good as the rest of it!"

A note: some authors and artists are not going to take any criticism well -- this is something they need to learn how to do if they're going to sell anything. So long as you are polite and respectful, you cannot be responsible if the other person over-reacts.
