You are only allowed to get the free songs from iTunes for free.
To put a song on your Apple device, you must first put it on iTunes. You can do that buy importing a mp3 file from your computer, or purchasing it from iTunes directly. Then you can sync iTunes with your device which copies the songs onto it.
If you connect the iPod to iTunes, go to the iPod's music library, and then just drag the songs from the iPod to the iTunes music library.

You need iTunes. The latest version can be free downloaded from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/. If your songs are in MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV formats, you can directly put them on iTunes and transfer them to your iPod. Yes, you have to pay for songs on itunes to put them on your ipod. But, if you scroll to the bottom of the itunes homepage, there will be a section titled something like "free on itunes" and you can click on that to see what they have for free. There is another way to put songs on your ipod, it's called Limewire, and I'm pretty sure that it's illegal. I'd just stick to itunes. i have checked the website (limewire.com) and it says it's completely legal. frostwire.com is another option although i have not checked it yet.
