I replaced the ignition cylinder (switch) on my '87 which is basically the same truck. It was pretty simple once I used a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel . I don't remember exactly how it was done but I followed the instructions in the haynes manual to remove the steering wheel column cover. There were a few lock rings and bolts to remove but it was pretty straightforward. Sorry I can't give any more detailed instructions.
how to remove cover to replace ignition lock cylinder and what type of tools do i need

With no key you will have to drill out the existing tumbler assembly from the switch in order to unscrew the ignition switch bezel.
Turn it, then pull up and out.
Remove the steering wheel then the lock plate then the turn signal switch. You will then see a screw close to the side of the lock cylinder. Remove this screw and pull the lock cylinder out. It takes a special tool to remove the lock plate and you can rent then at some parts stores although they aren't very costly.

New AnswerUsing your current key, insert it into the ignition & turn the ignition to the "On" position but not the "Start" position. Do not start the truck. Next, using a very small screwdriver (preferably a Phillips head) insert it into the hole located under the ignition key cylinder on the steering column.Pressing upwards with the small screwdriver or nail, you will press in the release button.Firmly grip the key & ignition cylinder while pressing up on this release button & remove while in the "On" position.Insert your new ignition cylinder with the key in it, into the "On" position until it snaps in place. Going in, the release button does not need to be depressed. You now have a Cylinder key, that will not match your door lock keys!Best of luck.
