2002 was a changeover year for the HVAC system by Ford so the answer is different dependent on whether you have the older or newer system. The same systems were used on Explorer, Mountaineer, Mazda, and other vehicles. On both systems, the problem is usually not the motor, but the blend door itself. The door breaks on either system(for different reasons) and the computer system detects a fault and shuts down the actuator motor. Generally a "dead motor" is just the computer shutting it down, not an actual failure of the motor.

You can check the location and functionality of your actuator motor by identifying which system you have from the pictures and following the procedure on how to check motor operation with a 9V battery and a snap connector. The diagnostic information and suggested fixes are available on heatertreater.net.
