Congratulations! You have a product or two that you can sell into the entertainment industry. Your first duty is to protect your product by exuding copyrights over the material -- each product.
Getting your copyrighted product into the right hands is complex and may depend on the phase of the moon. In other words, there is no direct track between you and the production company who will embrace your product and turn it into a film. You'll always find yourself in a maze.
Here are several options you can pursue:
- Get your script into the hands of a well-connected agent or manager who loves your script and will take a percentage of the payment to you for shopping it around. Your book agent may have some connections. (Never pay anyone to shop your script.)
- Attend a 'pitch festival' where you select the executive of a production company -- do your homework: find a movie like your story and find out the name of its production company -- with whom you can spend 15 minutes and convince to buy your script.
- Buy 'coverage' of your script from a reputable, well-connected organization, such as ScriptShark, and take their advice. (Link, below.)
- Approach an actor for whom a major part in your script is a 'perfect fit' and work with the actor to get your script into the right hands. (Actor is then an Executive Producer.)
- And keep writing. Don't stop at just one script. Write another story.
Maintain your enthusiasm and your confidence in your product(s): it's the most contagious and generally the most entertaining part of any acquisition officer's job. It will 'get you in the door'.
The amount of time it will take for you to sell your script or your book is unknown. The connections and attempts you will make may pay off or not. In sum: you never know -- until someone offers you a contract.
