You use a "browser" and related computer software to "connect" your computer to information sources connected to the web somewhere else, making copies of data files or streams that your computer can display, store, play, run, or whatever.
A program called a "browser" (ex. Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft internet Explorer) connects to a web server (usually running Apache HTTP server or Microsoft IIS), which sends it the content of the webpage, usually in HTML format.
Information is stored on very large hard drives called servers. All servers are interconnected. Your computer can connect to these servers through the Internet and store/retrieve any information you desire. The connection between these servers and computers like yours is called a web.
If you know the location of the information, you can retrieve it directly ex. opening your email or a known website.
When you search for anything from your computer, your query is forwarded to a special software. This software actually has a list of which information is stored on which server (& at what location). Accordingly, it goes through it's list and tells shows you all the probable options of finding that information.

The "word-wide-web" by definition is world wide. An "intranet" by definition is not world wide and closed off from the world. As the two are diametrically opposed you can not apply the world-wide-web in an intranet. However the standards and tools used to deliver the world-wide-web can be used in an intranet.
