It really isn't done any more. TV's and computers have a different resolution (number of lines). You can purchase an adapter, but it gives a bad picture. Many HD sets can be used; the ones that have that ability are equipped with video in ports.
Use your laptop's PCMCIA or USB connections with a TV tuner card.

Your TV has to have eithor a VGA port or a HDMI port. Your computer will have a VGA for sure, but you will have to check if it has a HDMI. HDMI has better definition than VGA, so if you computer has a HDMI output and your TV has a HDMI input then you should use HDMI, but VGA also works.
VGA is the bulky rectangular blue cable that somtimes has screws. HDMI is the slender rectanular black (or sometimes grey) one that probably has gold-like metal at the ends. There is one of these two cables connecting your moniter to your computer.
The best place that I have found where you can watch tv online for a small fee is Satellite Direct, includes loads of Satellite channels and is a really good service, including : FOX , ESPN , CBS , NBC , ABC ... If you are interested then please take a look at the link below.

It costs only a little dollar , but then you never have to pay for tv again. There is no monthly fee, and the software is yours forever. You get over 3500 different channels from all over the world, including a lot of sports channels. Ever since I bought it, I haven't paid a cent for Cable Television because I get it all for free on my computer. It's also much more convenient since now I can take my TV anywhere. I will never go back to the huge monthly fees for cable. The cost of a lifetime's use of this product is less than one month's cost for digital cable.
*** MUST READ about Satellite TV on PC
You don't really receive the good, paid-for streams, for those you must pay a monthly fee any way you slice the pie. and your cable/ATSC/DVB-C/whatever fee is just a slight to moderate discount on how much you'd pay if you bought IP streams from the TV channels' company directly.
The most easy to use way is to use "Slingbox" which you can use on any computer and most mobile devices.
Type Project Free TV into Google and you can watch free TV and films on your computer from there. The downside is there are a lot of pop-ups ect. and adverts everywhere.
Either through a PC TV card or digital dongle, or through webtv channels
