Bushfires are common in Australia. They can occur with equal force in grasslands and in bushland. They tend to occur more in the southern states, where summers are hot and dry, but they are also common up the coast of New South Wales, and in limited regions of Queensland, such as the area around Rockhampton.

Bushfires can occur throughout Australia, and at any time during the year. They are more likely to happen in the southern states during Summer and Autumn, in the north during Winter and Spring, and in the middle latitudes during Spring and Summer. They are also more likely following a period when there has been plenty of rainfall, followed by weeks of dry, hot weather which dries out all the new vegetation which has sprung up.

Bushfires occur very frequently in Australia once the weather starts to get warmer, from around September. The National Parks of the Sydney area are particularly prone to regular bushfires during Australia's hot, dry southern summers. However, most bushfires are small and easily contained. Tragedies like those which occurred in Victoria in 1939 and 2009, South Australia in 2005 and Victoria and South Australia in 1983 are few and far between.
