Importance of Communication Communication is an integral instinct of all living things. The importance of communication is best understood when there is a lack of it. The following article discusses how important communication is and why it plays such a vital role in our daily lives.

Communication is easily overlooked, but the ability to communicate effectively is necessary to carry out the thoughts and visions of an organization to the people. The importance of speech and words whether through a paper or a voice is a communication medium to convey directions and provide synchronization. Without communication, there is no way to express thoughts, ideas and feelings.

There are many ways to provide communication from the organization to the people of your community. Whether through a phone, fax, email, letter, website, instant message softwares, social networking websites (facebook, twitter, myspace) and etc... you are able to communicate your organization to the world. Things can be expressed, ideas can be shared, and thoughts can be joined.

The ability and the importance of communication become much more crucial when you are on a mission or need to fulfill a goal. Without a means to communicate, your organization will become isolated. The ability to effectively communicate is very important when it is usually underestimated and overlooked.

Communication is a necessity as we use it to network, spread ideas, and promote. Communicate effectively through well known mediums and convey it simply and precisely. The importance of communication is crucial to the success of your organization because you need to reach out in order to fulfill your mission.

Importance of Communication in Managing People and OrganizationsCommunication is a central activity in most human and organizational activities.

Communication is one of the important topics of organization behavior. Effective communication is a prerequisite for implementing organizational strategies as well as for managing day to day activities through people. Managers spend more than three fourths of their time in communicating -- exchanging information. Communication is found to make the biggest relative contribution to the effectiveness of managers. Or in other words, good communicators are more likely to be adjudged as effective managers (followers voluntarily listen to them and carry out instructions).

But is communication the reason and solution to all problems in the world? Certainly not. Fred Luthans [1] strongly asserts this. Other issues like motivation, decision making, stress, organizational structure, etc. can also contribute to problems and therefore can be solutions to problems. But, it is to be stated that communication is a central activity in most human and organizational activities.

The Definition of Communication

Luthans [1] says experts have not agreed on a definition among themselves.

Most explanations of communication stress the use of symbols to transfer the meaning of information. One version is that communication is the understanding not of the visible but of the invisible and hidden. These hidden and symbolic elements embedded in the culture give meaning to the visible communication process. Involvement of people is another factor stressed. Ivancevich and Matteson [3] state that "communication among people does not depend on technology but rather on forces in people and their surroundings. It is a process that occurs within people."

Communication also has behavioral component. One of the statements emphasizing role of behavior is, "the only means by which one person can influence another is by the behaviors he performs-that is, the communicative exchanges between people provide the sole method by which influence or effects can be achieved." In other words, the behaviors that occur in an organization are important elements in the communication process of the organization. The personal and behavioral exchange view of communication takes many forms.

There is more to communication than just talk and gesture. Listening, understanding and interpreting are as much integral to communication as words -- verbal, written or gestured. Yes, even gestures in communication play a crucial role in conveying and interpreting the message! Similarly, how we communicate or express ourselves goes a great way towards determining how our expressions are interpreted. To quote Karl Popper, "It is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood". Faulty or incomplete communication can completely mar the purpose of communicating and may result in damaging consequences. This is where understanding the importance of communication and communicating the right way comes into picture. Not everyone is equally endowed with the ability to effectively express himself and this is where the importance of communication skills can be truly fathomed. The importance of communication is equal in every walk of like, be it in personal, professional or social life.

The Communication Process

The communication process involves a sender or communication source, the subject matter of communication, expressions used for communicating (encoding), the medium of communication, receiver(s) of the communication and the interpretation thereof (decoding) and feedback. This can be diagrammatically represented as follows:-

SENDER >>> MESSAGE >>> ENCODING >>>DECODING <<< RECEIVER <<< MEDIUM <<<>>>FEEDBACK

The last part, ie. FEEDBACK is crucial in determining whether the communication has been understood by the receiver in the same light as intended by the sender. Let us try and understand the importance of communication in different walks of our daily lives.

What is the Difference between the TCP and UDP in computer networking?

An important difference is that TCP includes mechanisms for reliable data communication (lost parts of the communication are re-sent), UDP doesn't. TCP is used when such a reliable communication is important. When speed is more important than reliability, UDP is used instead. This is the case with phone or video communication over the Internet. An important difference is that TCP includes mechanisms for reliable data communication (lost parts of the communication are re-sent), UDP doesn't.
