Generally speaking, it takes at least a few months. That's how long it usually takes the big search engines, especially Google, to index a new site. Of course, the popularity of your site and the speed at which it becomes popular really depends on what you offer and how you promote it.
Here are some suggestions for building and promoting a site:
- Put original, valuable content on the site.
- Make sure your site is linked from at least one other site that is already in the search engines. This will enable their "bots" to find you.
- Work on getting more links. Encourage other Web sites that are related to yours to link to you. Guest posting is all the rage now (hint!).
- If you are building a site for an offline business, send your URL to your customers, clients, etc. Don't forget to put it on your letterhead and include it in any advertising.
- Consider pay-per-click advertising such as Google AdWords. It can be expensive, but it's a surefire way to get targeted visitors.
