There is no official dating for the seasons, but France, in common with the rest of the Northern Hemisphere, usually counts its seasons from the solstices and equinoxes. so:

L'été commence le 21 juin et finit le 21 septembre. Summer is from 21 June (summer solstice) to 21 September (autumnal equinox). to

L'automne du 22 septembre au 20 décembre. Autumn is 22 September to 20 December.

L'hiver du 21 décembre au 20 mars Winter is from 21 December (winter solstice) to 21 March (Spring equinox).

Le printemps du 21 mars au 20 juin. Spring is from 21 March to 20 June.

There is, however, a body of opinion which places the start of each season midway between the solstice and equinox, so that Spring would be from early February to mid-May, Summer would end in August, and winter would be from November to February.

France is a rather large nation with differing longitudes and elevations. Some places near the Mediterranean Sea have a growing season of about 5.5 months, while the growing season in northern areas is closer to 4 months.

Winters can last up to 3 months in France. On average France experiences 22 days with temperatures [slightly] below freezing point, the months of January and February being the coldest ones.

Compared to some other countries, the climate is rather mild (for instance blizzard conditions are unknown in France), and except in mountainous parts, snow tends to be rare and in very limited amounts.

It is the exact opposite to Australia where December, January and February are all summer months. This means that in France, December through February are all winter months.
