It can't. One gram of carbohydrates ( ie bread, sugar) contains 4 calories. This is the same for one gram of protein (ie chicken, beef). But one gram of fat ( ie butter, oil) provides 9 calories of energy. By the way, 3500 calories is the equivalent of 1 pound of body fat.

To be really healthy you should consume as few refined processed carbohydrates as possible (see the list of these foods further down this page). Get your carbohydrates from fresh vegetables and some low carbohydrate fruits such as berries. If you are trying to lose weight, consume from 20 to 60 carbohydrates per day. You will need to experiment with that range and see what number works best for you.
