No one can say exactly, but almost all the soldiers who died were Caucasians. No one can even say exactly how many men were in either army, north or south, nor how many died. The best estimates are that 360,000 northern soldiers and 260,000 southern soldiers died. Two died of disease for every one killed in battle. The best study of northern records indicates that around 180,000 black troops eventually served in the northern armies, and of those, 1,800 died. So one out of every 200 dead Yankees was black (.5%) and the rest were Caucasian. There were no black southern troops until the last month or two of the war, and those never finished training and saw no action, and so far as I know none died.

No one can say how many civilian deaths were directly or indirectly attributable to the war, but the civilian Death Rate was much lower than in any war from WWII on. Armies then still made every effort to spare civilians.
