Heavy, or improperly worn, backpacks are a very common cause of Back pain in adolescents. A study published in the journal SPINE in 2003 (1) surveyed over 1100 kids aged between 12 and 18 years old and found almost 75% of them had back pain that was associated with backpack use.
Similarly, a study published in 2006 in the journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics (2) found that the weights of students' backpacks seemed directly proportional to the likelihood of back pain.
