* Abraham Lincoln was born there but it was not his political base. * Zachary Taylor was not born there however he had lived there for a period. Zachary Taylor, 15th president, was born to a prominent planting family at Orange County, Virginia in 1784, but came with his family to Louisville, Kentucky at a young age. He died while in office and was buried on his family's burial plot in Louisville, which would later become the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery. Abraham Lincoln, 16th president, was born to a backwoods farming family in 1809 at Sinking Spring, not far from Hodgenville, in what was then Hardin County, Kentucky (the area is now in Larue County). His family moved to Indiana in 1816, and then on to Illinois in about 1830, which is where he was laid to rest. Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States, was born at what was then Christian County, Kentucky (it would become part of Todd County) in 1808. For most of the early part of his life he went back and forth between Kentucky and Mississippi. Against the wishes of Zachary Taylor, Jefferson Davis married his daughter, Sarah Knox Taylor, near Louisville in 1835. She died of malaria a few months laters, and afterwards Davis spent the majority of his life in Mississippi.
As a state, Kentucky has never had presidents. Kentucky's first governor was Isaac Shelby and it became a state in 1792, under President George Washington. One US President was born in Kentucky but did not reside there when he took office and that was Abraham Lincoln who was born near Hodgenville. The other Presidentclosely associated with Kentucky would be Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States of America who was born in Christian County. In about 1868, James Kennedy Patterson became the first president of what would become the University of Kentucky, which at that time was the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky.
