That depends on the part of the world to which you refer. For example, most people in the western world do not do regular exercise. Since all people (worldwide) evolved to move, a more foolish procedure can hardly be imagined. It is best not to worry about what others do or do not do; instead, worry about what you do or do not do.

According to WebMD.com, one of the highest risk factors for Heart disease is a sedentary lifestyle, or a lifestyle that includes little to no exercise. Heart disease is a condition that can cause chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, and eventually heart attack and even death. If you get it, the prognosis isn't always good, even if you eat and exercise right--but this disease is preventable. Changing your sedentary lifestyle to a more active lifestyle is one of the best ways you can quickly improve your heart health.

How to Exercise to Improve Heart Health

So how do you change your sedentary lifestyle to a more active one?

  1. Begin with light physical activity for at least 10 minutes a day. Doctors recommend exercising anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes a day for five to six days a week, so you're going to slowly work up to that capacity. But why? Diving into heavy cardiovascular exercise when you're out of shape - or exercising too suddenly or heavily - could strain your heart and put you at risk for exercise injuries, which you don't want. Instead, work your way up slowly by doing light physical activity for 10 minutes a day. Gardening, walking or dancing are easy, joint-safe exercises you could easily do without any physical equipment.
  2. Start being active in your day-to-day life. To improve the strength of your heart, consider adding short spurts of exercise to tasks and chores you already do, such as shopping for groceries or visiting a favorite store. When putting groceries away, take only one bag at a time, briskly walking back and forth from the car to the refrigerator. Instead of driving to your favorite store, walk there instead. Try to squeeze any form of exercise into your day whenever possible to really strengthen your heart.
  3. Increase how long your exercise. After you feel comfortable exercising for 10 minutes or so, increase the length of your workouts by three minutes every week. This slowly trains your body to endure physical exercise for longer periods of time, gradually improving the function and strength of your heart. Remember to keep it show, and only proceed as far as you feel comfortable.
  4. Add more vigorous cardiovascular exercise. As your heart adapts to the physical exercise, switch out walking or dancing for more vigorous cardiovascular exercise, such as running, working on an Arc trainer, or high intensity interval training on a treadmill. Continue to exercise for 30 to 60 minutes per day.
  5. Rest one to two days a week. It's good to let your body rest once or twice a week to allow for proper muscle recovery. Don't consider this a day to eat junk food, however--your diet also plays an important role in your cardiovascular health. Continue to exercise as usual after the rest period.

Continue to exercise and don't give up - this disease is completely preventable if you make sure to stay active!
