It's all about what sound you're after. For example, Dimebag used Randall transistor amps; some people like his tone, others don't. Most heavy metal bands use tube amps though - Slayer, Metallica, BLS, etc. If you aren't a fan of Dimebag's tone then I'd go with a transistor amp. They will set you back more but it's worth the price for the better sound.
