The Intel 80486DX is a 32-bit processor that was released by Intel in 1989. It was the first to include its own floating point unit on the same die. 80486SXs are different in that they have this component disabled to make the processor cheaper.

AMD, Intel, ARM, VIA, Samsung, etc have all produced or manufactured a single core or variant of a single core processor at some point. I'm sure there's more, but I can't imagine you need to know all of them. If you meant FIRST single-core processor... The Intel 4004 was a 4-bit processor manufacturered in 1971-- This has the distinction of being the first fully complete processor contained on a single chip.

Whenever you ask if something is fast, you must always have a point of reference. Is a bicycle fast? Is a Ferrari fast? Is the Concorde jet fast? Is light fast? Is an AMD processor the fastest type of processor available? No. Is an AMD processor faster than an Intel processor of the same price? Probably. Is an AMD 5x86 faster than an Intel Xeon? Heck, no! Is an AMD Phenom faster than a Pentium 4? Yes.
If you mean an "Operating System" upgrade then yes, but only up to a point. Depending on the size of the Processor the computer has you can upgrade up to 10.5 Leopard.Snow Leopard, 10.6 is only for the Intel processor Macs.
In most ways, Intel was at one point superior to its competitors, but now with the cost of production as low as it is, AMD is able to create equal-quality processors for less cost. Some purists still stand by Intel, but for the most part, they are relying on their niche market processor sales. Mostly, there isn't too much variation in the way processors and other IC chips are made, it mostly depends on personal preference. If you plan on investing, I can't make too many claims, but as far as which manufacturer to chose when buying a processor or computer, there's no difference in quality between Intel and AMD. At one point there may have been, but at this point, just go for the lowest price between the two.
