EDIT: Jimi Hendrix was a temporary bassist and there was nothing special about his Bass Guitar, but the bass was not his predominant instrument. He excelled at playing a 6 stringed stratocaster and often destroyed many while playing live from setting them on fire to using them to destroy other stage equipment.

To be honesy I think that the 5 string bass is the best option as it offers range on tone without becoming bulky and unnecersary, as anything 6 strings or above is for me.
Can you put regular bass strings on an acoustic bass?
Yes you can and they will work fine, the tone will be affected. The steel strings for an electric guitar (steel so they interact with the magnets on the pickup) will not sound as full and rich as the bronze strings designed for acoustic. In a pinch, they will work just fine! (but not visa-versa because of the magnet thing).
Does a double bass have the biggest bow?
Of the modern orchestral strings, the string bass or double bass has the largest bow, but not the longest. While the wooden part of the bow is much larger (nearly twice the diameter) of a violin bow, and the hair "ribbon" is wider and thicker with heavier hair, the violin bow is longer. The bass bow is heavier because it needs to have more weight behind it to move the heavy strings on the bass. It is short because the player does not bend his arm like the smaller instruments, and has a smaller range of motion across the strings. This is not a big problem, because the dynamics of bowing let the bass player move the bow more slowly across the strings and thus can get just as long a note as violinists can with their longer bows.
What is better 4 or 5 string bass?
The difference is the amount of strings. A six string doesnt have better chords than a twelve stringed. The twelve string sounds much more rich and has a unique sound, along with more chords to play.
