The East German Border Command Central managed to seal off West Berlin in one night--August 13, 1961. All they did was to block off the thousands of roads leading into West Berlin and put sentries around the western sectors to arrest, or shoot, anyone attempting to escape.
The huge structure we all know as The Wall took many years to build--in fact, I don't ever think they finished it. Every time someone escaped, they did more building at the place the escape happened to keep anyone else from getting out there.

My favorite escape story was an East German man who walked up to a control point on the Berlin Wall, and waited next to the door until a guard came out. He told the guard, "I am trying to visit my sick grandmother in West Berlin, but I have forgotten my papers." The guard told him to go home and get his papers. He moved to the other side of the door, then waited for a different guard to come out. "I am trying to visit my sick grandmother in East Berlin, but I have forgotten my papers." The guard told him to go back into West Berlin and get his papers.
