A general rule of thumb for the amount of water that should be consumed per day is: a healthy individual with normal exercise and perspiration should drink a minimum of 1 cc (ml) of water per calorie of food consumed. For example, if on a 1000 calorie daily diet, at least 1000 ccs of water/liquids should be consumed per day (1 liter). Most diets in the US, however, consist of many more than 1000 calories per day.*

Water usage for all uses (and not just consumption for physical hydration) varies from location to location and according to the available supply. For example, the average Australian uses 450 litres of water per day when the minimum you need is 15 litres in order to survive.

*According to the USDA.gov factbook:

Americans at the beginning of the 21st

century are consuming more food and

several hundred more calories per person

per day than did their counterparts

in the late 1950s (when per capita calorie

consumption was at the lowest level in

the last century), or even in the 1970s.

The aggregate food supply in 2000 provided

3,800 calories per person per day,

500 calories above the 1970 level and 800

calories above the record low in 1957

and 1958.

I'd say about 2,920 cups of water a year. I know this because the average person is supposed to drink about eight cups a day. There are 365 days in a year so when you multiply 8 by 365 you will get 2,920 in all.

Hope this helped!
