Succinctly almost 2,000 years. What we have come to call the "Colosseum" in the city of Rome was known to the ancient Romans as the "Vespasian Amphitheatre after Titus Flavius Sabinus Vespasianus, the Roman Emperor who commissioned it built in the late 1st Century C.E. (A.D.) as "a gift to the Roman people" (said largely financed with the booty looted by his legions during their "pacification" of the Jews). It is (was) both an engineering & architectural world wonder then, and equally regarded so now even by all our modern standards & abilities. The scenes from the recent movie "Gladiator" showing how this colossal arena looked & operated and the kind of events staged there are surprisingly accurate; however, far more spectacular & sensational "circuses" both amusing & barbaric were staged there before this movies latter 3rd Century C.E. setting. There is a great deal of new literature & video now available re this subject from the usual sources...

The Roman Empire dates to 27 BC, when Octavian was given the title Augustus by the senate. It divided permanently in 395 AD into the East Roman Empire and the West Roman Empire. The date usually given for the fall of Rome is 476, when the last emperor of the West Roman Empire was deposed. The East Roman Empire, however, survived until 1453.
