Joseph Stalin was the dictator of the USSR longer than any other dictator in the twentieth century. To keep power for so long, through a major war, and with such a large diversity of peoples was not easy.e had to use his power differently with the various people groups under his control. In a general way, the calculated use of terror was used whenever necessary. He kept other left wing communist party groups in line with show trials that sent possible Marxist opponents to Siberia or to be executed as enemies of the people. He rewarded people he trusted with power and position. Not too much of either however. For the common person, his education and Propaganda machine worked wonders. By elevating the Communist State and its dogmatic policies above "reason", he was able to keep people for thinking on their own. He made them dependent on the power of the state. There could be no self reliance and by keeping economic power centralized, he withhold needs and reward others with what he withheld from others.

He provided shelter but the bare minimum and encouraged participation in public affairs such as parades and "peoples" celebrations.

Censorship was also required and he was seen as a master of having the government presses say what was needed to be said.

He also had control of the military, and suspected generals were removed.

He thus was able to keep his power far longer than anyone would have ever expected.

When did Joseph Stalin become leader of the soviet union?

Stalin became a Soviet Union's and a country's communist party leader in 1924, after death of V. Lenin. However, his actual dictatorship began around 1930, after he banned all private businesses, eliminated opposition, and started 20+ years-long campaign of killing fellow countrymen by the millions. By some estimates as many as 50 million people were murdered or died in camps in the name of socialism/communism.

What was the Russian's strategy against the Germans in World War 2?

Stalin strategy was to start war with Germany approximately in July 1941. There are official Soviet Army orders and maps of this campaign published. Hitler has started war one month before Stalin - in June 1941. And Hitler campaign was much more successful then Stalin's one in 1941. But USSR was a few times bigger then Germany. Germany has no chance to have long war with USSR. USSR spends 2-3 times more tanks, airplanes and soldiers and finally wins. Its all the 'soviet strategy' :).

How long was Joseph Stalin president of the soviet reunion for?

Stalin wan't a president, he was the 'General Secretary of the Soviet Union'. But he was the de facto leader from 1924 after Lenin's death, until his own death in 1953. By the way; its the Soviet Union, not 'reunion'.

The soviet union had a total of two leaders between the early 1920s and early 1950swhat were their names?

The question is disputable as there was no one leader of the USSR (A confederation of states including but not limited to Russia which was controlled in Moscow IE not just Russia.) During the 1920s due there was a power struggle which began after the death of Lenin in January 1924. Various candidates such as Trotsky, Stalin, Bukharin and others fought for party support - this struggle was eventually won by Stalin who gained enough popularity within the Communist Party to then become the leader of the USSR in 1928. Stalin's leadership was long, brutal but arguably successful only ending with his death in 1953. Tens of millions of Soviet citizens died for a large number of reasons while he stood at the helm; however Russia did advance at a huge pace from an obscure peasant society in the 1920s that was largely irrelevant to global affairs to a modern industrialised state and after his death ultimately the world's other superpower only matched by the United States.
