Most main drains for vinyl liner pools have a threaded port inside of the drain itself. This threaded port is used to plumb in the main drain. The easiest way to fix this is to swim down to the main drain, remove the grate, which is held on with two screws, COME UP FOR AIR, then screw in a threaded 11/2 plug into the port. This will stop water from leaking if the leak is in the line itself and not in the drain.
We plugged ours due to a leak for 5 years and simply ran the top skimmer and a barracuda/creepy crawler automatic cleaning/vacuuming thing. As long as you use a device like those that suck from the bottom you should have no problem.

If this a vinyl liner pool... the grate (anti vortex dome) is attached by two screws. the main drain frame is held on with 8 screws and should not be removed. With either vinyl or concrete application.... 1. blow air down the bottom drain line to dislodge the pebbles using a compressor or a blower ( used for winterizing lines and is available from many pool stores) 2. remove them by hand from the bottom drain Jim
