There are a number of factors to consider. First you can become a clothing designer simply because you decide to become one. No one but you a close friend may beaware that you are one, but you would actually be a fashion designer. I suspectyou mean famous, renowned, or successful, clothing designer. A fashion designing talent, is the most important gift to have, followed by publicity, and of course a backer (someone with the financial resources that will allow you to buy fabric, sew the garments, and promote the collection) to keep you from going broke. There certainly is education to consider, FIT (Fashion Istitute of Technology) in New York teaches a variety of courses in clothing design. There are a number of designers who haven't attended fashion schools, but have still become sucessful. If you decide you wish to attend a fashion school, you may get a degree within 3 or 4 years.After that you may get a job in the field working for an apparel company or a designer. You might even have a position designing specific type of apparel,children's, or women's, or accessories. There are many designer jobs that are working for someone. The designer with a successful name is a whole other story. There is no guarantee to become a famous designer (unless you were famous before designing like P Diddy or other celebrity/designer) but with talent, patience,a VERY STRONG determination, you will be on road to become a name designer.
