South Pole In early March 1999, Dr. Jerri Nielsen, who was the only physician among the 41 men and women at the South Pole, discovered a lump in her right breast. The lump was malignant, and she was stuck at the South Pole with no hope of being rescued until October. An Air Force C-141 dropped medical supplies at the Pole on July 10, 1999, without landing anywhere in Antarctica. Finally, a New York Air National Guard LC-130 Hercules landed at the Pole on Oct. 15, 1999 to pick up Nielsen and leave another physician. In 2001, Nielsen told her story in a book, Ice Bound: A Doctor's Incredible Battle for Survival.
