Superficially, it seems like a patriarchy, but it isn't. It's more matriarchial than most other Western societies. Women play important roles in the public and private spheres. I'd say that in modern Greece the "family" rules things far more than "women" or "men". Relationships are very important, and people are still strongly influenced by family connections and expectations than in other Western countries where people can be more independent.
Ancient Greek religion was patriarchal and polytheistic. In Greek mythology, the gods were predominantly male and held positions of power. Additionally, the society in ancient Greece was largely patriarchal, with men occupying dominant roles in both public and private spheres.
"Matriarchal culture" refers to a culture in which women, especially mother and grandmother figures, rather than men, are the primary leadership. The term comes from the ancient Greek mater, meaning "mother" and archein, meaning "to rule."Though most cultures have historically been "patriarchal," meaning men are the societal leaders. Numerous very successful cultures have been matriarchal, going back to the most ancient of times, to include Egypt, China, and numerous North American First Nations tribes as examples. In these cultures, succession (who inherits what) was through the daughter, rather than the son.
