Yes. They were the same country and both ruled by Britain for hundreds of years until the early 1920's when after much effort and fighting from the Irish to achieve independance Britain agreed to partition the Island and recognise the Republic's independance but remain in control of some counties in the northeast. There was a civil war in Ireland over whether this treaty should be accepted, but the pro-treaty side won, so the country was partitioned.

In more recent times Northern Ireland have set up an local parliament (like in Scotland and Wales) where local issues are dealt with. However, it remains part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (despite the fighting in Northern Ireland) and the UK is a separate country from the Republic.

Northern Ireland is ruled by Great Britain

They are not really that different. You have to remember Ireland is a small country. They are not governed by the same parliament as the republic instead they have their own. They have a different accent, but then again there is a different accent for every part of Ireland and they do not have the place names written in Irish, they are written in English only. That's it really.

Yes and no. There are two parts to the island of Ireland - Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland is a separate country. Ireland can officially refer to the Republic of Ireland, as can Éire, the name for Ireland in the Irish language. Both of those are set out in the Irish constitution. Ireland can also refer to the island which contains the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

A part of Ireland known as Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. Geographically, there are parts of the island of Ireland that are in the north, but not part of Northern Ireland. The most northerly point in Ireland is in the Republic of Ireland, often incorrectly referred to as Southern Ireland. See the map at the link below. You will see that the darker area is what is referred to as Northern Ireland, but you will also see that part of the lighter area is in the north of Ireland.

Yes and no.

In 1920, a law was passed which made the six counties of Northern Ireland part of the UK, so they are now joined to the British government instead of the government in Dublin.

In saying that, many still regard themsleves as Irish and many want to become part of Ireland constitutionally again. The culture in the North is much the same as well.

The Republic of Ireland is it's own independent country. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. The reason that Northern Ireland never joined it's mother country is because of the high protestant population in Northern Ireland, which negates the mostly catholic nation from uniting the country under one banner.
"Northern" Ireland would be more accurately the northeast of Ireland. Northern Ireland and Ireland are two different countries that originally were one. Northern Ireland is about 45-45 Catholic and Protestant and a mainly urban population while Ireland is a 89% Catholic more rural population although the population of urban areas is increasing while rural ones decrease.
