A phone call would be much more personal or at least mailing a card and flowers to your mother. Emails are cold and on such a special occasion you should give your mom at least that phone call just to tell her you love her and you're OK.

That is a very tough question. On one hand, non-mothers could feel left out if they are not wished a Happy Mother's Day. On the other hand, women who could not have children might be hurt by it. Another avenue of thought might be that wishing a non-mother a Happy Mother's Day would be disrespectful to mothers. The bottom line is that Mother's Day is for mothers, Though it probably does not hurt anything to wish a non-mother a Happy Mother's Day, it certainly is not expected.
