This engine was famous for stripping the timing gear. It probably needs a new one but not easy to replace since you have to pull the camshaft to press the gear on.
A 2001 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2 engine is a zero tolerance engine which will suffer catastrophic damage should the timing system fail. Because of the tight tolerances inside the engine, even being out of alignment a fraction of a second can cause the valves to slam into the pistons.
The 3FSE engine is not an interference (zero tolerance) engine.
Yes the 2.2 is zero tolorence there is no adjustment on the rocker arms and the head bolts are torque to yeild. so if you have a ticking other then the injectors you need to replace the lifters and they are roller,
No. Nothing is zero tolerance if you measure to a great enough precision.

The 2001 PT Cruiser with a 2.4 liter engine has a zero tolerance or interference engine. This means that if any of the timing components fail, the engine itself will because severely damaged.
if by zero tolerance you mean that if the timing goes the valves will get bent then yes it is ^ that is wrong Non Interference is that term and your engine IS NON INTERFERENCE !!
