It depends on where you are and what kind of design you do. Imagine you do manuals for Caterpillar. Caterpillar's headquarters is in Illinois, so you probably are too. Should Caterpillar's forklift operation, which is in Texas, come up with a new machine you need to create manuals for, you're probably going to wind up in Texas for at least a few days. A lot of graphic designers do press checks--approving sheets as they come off the press. A vast amount of print, especially children's books, is being done in the Orient, so designers flying to Korea or China to check print runs is not uncommon. And a lot of printers don't travel at all--or just in the local area. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Only few of us will do travel and manage press checks, when we are freelancers. rest of the graphic designer does what they know ie: if somebody know only photoshop or illustrator they dont want to go to press to check their proofs and they dont even go to client's place to discuss anything about the design bcoz they are graphic designer but not good communicator.
