Most names of cities and places that use "New" has a relationship with the original. Usually the people come from the original place and settle in a different area or continent. They name the new town after the place where they came from.
New York relates to York England.
New York City was named New Amsterdam after the city in Europe but the name was later changed.
In the case of New Guinea, the name is derived from 'Nueva Guinea', the name used by Spanish explorer Yñigo Ortiz de Retez, who named the island that because he observed that the people were similar in appearance to those occupying the Guinea coast of Africa.
