From 2003-2009, there had been ferry service between the two islands of Oahu and Maui. The service was called, the Hawaii SuperFerry. Due to not having an adequate EIS (Environmental Impact Statement) required by the State of Hawaii, and negative responses by the people for expansion throughout the islands, the SuperFerry officially ended its service by filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in March 2009. The two high-speed ferries used for the services are now owned by the US Maritime Administration. In Feburary of 2010, Hawaii state lawmakers and leaders were considering buying back the ferries and starting a state-run ferry service.

The above answer is accurate, but it should note that the EIS was waived originally due to the obvious importance of providing an Island ferry service as quickly as possible, and is for the common good. This subsequently caused concern to one political party which felt keeping control was more important than what doing what was actually good for the islands. It clearly exhibits the shortsightedness of the the current Hawaiian political environment, as Hawaii remains the only major archipelago without a ferry service.
