Burma (also known as Myanmar) is ruled by a murderous and merciless military regime. Senior General Than Shwe is the current head of state, with his other co-generals, all of them are members of the so-called State Peace and Development Council.
The controlling regime has been criticized for a great number of human rights violations. Shwe's army has destroyed 3,000 villages across the country, launched a terrible campaign against the Muslim minorities in Burma, forcing an estimated 250,000 people to flee to neighbouring country Bangladesh as refugees and recruiting over 70,000 child soldiers at gunpoint. His daughter, Thandar Shwe's wedding, was so extravagant that some of the wedding gifts given to her cost a shocking $50,000,000! The video of the wedding, I think, was smuggled out of Burma and uploaded on Youtube.com, or maybe it was uploaded secretly in Burma...
His army, the Tatmadaw, is now nearly half-a-million strong and uses rape as a weapon against the ethnic minorities in Burma.
There are over 1,000,000 internally displaced people throughout the country, these people have been forced to choose between slavery or to flee to the jungle...many chose to flee into the jungle and are now struggling to survive.
He has continously told the Burmese that his government is following the road to democracy, but the road to democracy that he is talking about is just the road to nowhere and more repression.
Shwe is the one and only man who is greatly HATED by the Burmese people, whatever he does, and if he even says that he is leading the Burmese nation and people to prosperity, he's not.
Yes it does have a mean bad dictator

Yes, the military took control of Burma from the democratically elected government.
No Thailand is a democracy/partial monarchy. The government however is dominated by the military, who will probably hang on to power for the forseeable future.
no, now ruling by a government elected by people

Myanmar was established under that name in 1989 when the military dictatorship changed the name of Burma to Myanmar. When Burma was established is a very long and complicated story, and the answer must always remain a matter of opinion.
if it's for "Colossus" the answer is Myanmar (formerly Burma)
Myanmar Burma (Myanmar), Morocco, and Mauritaniayes, since 1962
Burma. Myanmar was originally known as Burma, and that is still its official name. No legislature in Burma has actually approved the name Myanmar, which is derived from the Burmese short-form name Myanma Naingngandaw and has been promoted by the military authorities in Burma. The conventional long form of the country is Union of Burma, and this in the local long form is Pyidaungzu Myanma Naingngandaw.
Burma is a country located in Southeast Asia. Its named was changed by the ruling military government in 1989 to Myanmar. Some national governments including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the Burmese population fail to recognize this name change as they do not recognize the military government that brought about this event.
Military Dictatorship
Burma was renamed Myanmar some decades ago, by the military Junta in charge.
If your concerns arise from the situation in Burma (Myanmar) don't worry. Thailand has been relatively success, whereas Burma has a wretched economy and has been an odious military dictatorship for a very long time. The two societies are very different.
It is currently under a military dictatorship, but wouldn't be communist.
Myanmar is also known as Burma
Although the ruling Military Junta has decreed that the name should be Myanmar, the many major powers still recognize its official name as Burma. The United Nations accepts the name Myanmar, since the UN allows its members states to be known by any name they choose. However it has not been recognized by many Western governments such as the United States, Australia, Canada or the United Kingdom, which continue to use "Burma", while the European Union uses "Burma/Myanmar" as an alternative. Democracy advocates and dissidents refuse to accept the change because they do not recognize the military dictatorship. For this reason, the use of "Burma" is generally preferred by the people themselves.
