The power button would still light up if the hard drive is bad, but only your BIOS would boot up.
If the power button lights up this proves that you have +5 Volt rail from the PSU and that the switch circuitry on the motherboard is functioning.
A simple way of proving that the PSU isproviding 12 volts is to insert a CD or dvd. The Motor on the CD/DVD drive is 12 volt. The drive is also an intelligent device (It has its own onboard CPU) so even if the computer wont start the bios or OS then this should still function.
So assuming the voltage is there to power the computer board sucessfully, Does the display start up , can you see the BIO information on the screen? Are any faults shown?
No display may indicate a fault on the videocard, or the motherboard or any other component plugged into the PCI slots. A technician would strip the system down to its minimum components to try to substitution check the parts of the computer.
If the system shows a BIOS start up and no other error faults are indicated does the operating system boot? If it fails to boot it could mean a number of things 'one' of which could be a faulty hard drive. It could be a corrupted operating system boot sequence causing the system to fail. On Vista and Windows 7 a USB stick configured as a SmartDrive will prevent the system from starting if the system crashed prior to the reboot. Unplug it try the boot again.
Just a few ideas to try before throwing that drive away.
It is possible that your hard drive has crashed
if your asking how to turn on the computer then i would say probably pressing the on button. or holding the power button til it turns on.
because you have the power button turned on,push the button again to turn it off
This would depend on the type and model of computer. Generally, on a desktop computer, the power button will be on the front of the tower. Sometimes it can be on the side of the tower if not on the front. If it is an all-in-one computer, such as the imac, it may be on the monitor itself (possibly back or front). If you are using a laptop, it can often be found at the top right just above the keyboard. some older laptops have the button on either the side or front of the laptop.
The 'ON' button, the hard disk...
The first thing I would try is to hold down the menu button for 15 seconds. This should work but if it doesn't then try this: * Turn the computer and monitor off * Disconnect all monitor cabling from the monitor (power, USB, VGA, DVI, etc.) * Press and hold in the monitor power button in for 5 seconds * Reconnect the monitor to the computer * Reconnect the monitor power cord to the monitor * Turn on the monitor, then the computer * Press the Menu button for 15 seconds to unlock the padlock feature
There are several steps that need to be followed in order to change the drive order on a computer. First, go into the BIOS and press whichever button opens the menu. Go to the boot tab, then set the floppy drive as the second drive, or drive b. Finally, save the selection, and start the computer.
The computer will power on, but it will not load windows. You will most likely get a black screen stating that the operating system disk can not be found. I would recommend unplugging the computer, plugging the power back into the hard drive and then re-plugging in the computer to get it to work properly.
If you are asking what the largest storage component in a personal computer is, that would be the hard drive. The hard drive is a non volatile storage medium. Meaning it holds its data, even when the power is turned off.
vannesa is so sexyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Would I need an external hard drive case? I opened up the Gateway and there are no cords that would be able to connect to the hard drive from the Dell, unlike someone had told me. Though I understand because they are two different computers. Answer: Shut down the computer. and then open cabinet and remove hard drive power cable and data cable. and screw. and then install new hard drive.
Do it would be the general way forward. To prevent this happeneing again. Make sure that you are turning the computer off from the windows start icon in the lower left corner. Do NOT turn off the power to the computer from the mains. Refrain from turning off the computer from the power button
