They created the idea of Phonics, or using sounds with their "alphabet" in order to dictate their spelling and also translation from the paper to the mouth. Besides that, the Phoenicians were also known for their superior naval abilities and development of sea vessels, and they were famed for their purple dye, which was a very rare color during their time.

The Phoenicians were a commercial trading people. They began in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and established business relationships with other peoples in the Mediterranean Sea area. To augment their trading they constructed cargo ships and and naval vessels to protect their commercial interests. They also constructed colonies throughout the Mediterranean Sea. One major colony was Carthage that became a leading power. This city state was located on the North African coast south of Sicily. The Phoenicians were a Semitic people.
