Most search features use the results of others verbatim. Only four actually search the web and are therefore engines: Google.com, Yahoo.com, Bing.com and Ask.com. The rest just enlist the help of those four, and this is normally indicated by a "Powered by ..." notice at the bottom of the page.
An engine which combines them ("Powered by Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Ask.com") is known as a meta-search engine. A list and more detailed description of these can be found at the related Wikipedia links.

You can actually use search engines only online. There are other type of search tools that do off-line "desktop" searches, but they are not referred to as search engines.

Generally speaking, meta search engines perform searches using a conglomeration of other search engines. Metasearch engines enable users to enter search criteria once and access several search engines simultaneously. Metasearch engines operate on the premise that the Web is too large for any one search engine to index it all and that more comprehensive search results can be obtained by combining the results from several search engines. This also may save the user from having to use multiple search engines separately.
I believe you mean "metasearch". It's a search engine which combines the results of OTHER search engines.

Example: AOL uses Google search. These 'customized searches' have not been included in these lists. Also, search engines, which simply compile results from other search engines, (eg Dogpile, Metacrawler) are not included in this list.
