The north of Ireland is on the island of Ireland. The province of Ulster is in the geographical north of Ireland, and contains 9 counties. 6 of those counties form Northern Ireland. The other 3 counties of Ulster and the rest of the island forms Ireland, officially known as Éire, and sometimes referred to as the Republic of Ireland. As it happens, the most northerly point on the island of Ireland is not in one of the 6 counties that form Northern Ireland, but in county Donegal, which is one of the other 3 Ulster counties. Northern Ireland came into existence in 1922, as a result of a treaty between Britain and Ireland which partitioned the island.
Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom along with England, Scotland and Wales. The Republic of Ireland uses the Euro as its currency and has its own government, whereas Northern Ireland's currency is Sterling, and it has a devolved assembly for governing itself and also representation in Westminster, where the British Parliament sits. If this should change is a matter for the people of Northern Ireland.
