In a modern secular democracy, one's sexuality should not be a concern of the state but a personal matter for the individual. Certain religious groups advocate the execution of homosexuals as per the laws stated in their scriptures but that doesn't mean they have any right to enforce such draconian laws in a modern secular democracy. In theocratic societies (i.e. Iran, Saudi Arabia), it is up to the laws in that country on how they deal with homosexuality and homosexuals.
Some religious folk claim that the death sentence is for the act of sodomy and not the inclination of same sex attraction but there are many hard line religious people especially from the Abrahamic traditions who advocate the death sentence regardless of a sexual act taking place. The reasons usually range from keeping purity in society to protecting marriage, family and lineage. Of course it can be argued "What is purity?", "What constitutes a family?" or "Does a child really need both a mother and father?".
Others may claim that it serves as a deterrent to people who may consider practicing homosexual sex and although some may not risk it as a result, it has to be said that countries like Iran, Sudan and Saudi Arabia still have homosexuals - despite having the death penalty for homosexuality.
The end goal of executing homosexuals by the religious institutions may have been to completely rid the world of homosexuality. Obviously such attempts have been completely futile as today, thousands of years after such laws were prescribed, homosexuality still exists.
So in short, no, gay people should not be executed as it achieves nothing other than bloodshed. It does not and will not stop the inclination or practice of homosexuality. Modern scientific advances are beginning to show that sexuality (the inclination and desire aspect of it) has a biological basis and isn't a choice despite what some may claim but that is another debate.
