From what I have gathered:
When the 'visible side' of the moon is increasing it is called 'waxing'. If it is decreasing it is called 'waning'.
If you wish to have more information on the subject and even a moon phase calendar click on the website that I linked below, it also has more links to other websites about the moon.
That is a waxing moon. A waning moon appears to grow smaller.
"Waxing" ... an olde English word for "growing".
An increasing moon is said to be waxing; when decreasing it is said to be waning.
Due to its tilted axis and its revolving around the earth, the sun light only hits certain portion of moon on different days of its revolvation. It is called: Waxing.
You guys are subpose to have the answer.
I sayed decreasing
Only one. New moon is the phase where the sun is completely dark, and crescent is the phase where only a sliver (or crescent) is showing. The night after a new moon, part of the moon will be illuminated, and it will be a crescent.
The phase of the moon that you see is the part of the moon that is illuminated by the sun. The relative positions of the sun and moon with respect to a viewer on Earth gradually shift during the lunar month, so that different sections of the moon are illuminated.
Waxing means that the illuminated part of the moon that faces us is increasing in size. Waxing starts at New Moon and ends at Full Moon. Then the moon wanes until New Moon.
The Moon phases when the Sea Of Tranquility is visible from Earth are the ones when that area is illuminated by the Sun. So, that's: part of the waxing crescent phase, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full Moon, and part of the waning gibbous phase.

The Moon is not visible at the new moon phase. At the first quarter, it is "waxing" - the illuminated portion is increasing. At the full, the illuminated portion of the Moon is 100%, and it is finished waxing and is about to begin "waning", when the illuminated part is decreasing. At the 3rd quarter, it is waning.
When the visible bright part of the Moon is increasing in size, the term "waxing" is used. When the visible part of the Moon is less and less illuminated each night, the term "waning" applies.

What changes is the part of the Moon that is illuminated. We see the illuminated part of the Moon better than the dark part.

One half of the Moon is always illuminated, except during a lunar eclipse. But we only see part of it.You may be referring to the new moon, when the half that is lit up is facing away from the Earth, and the half that faces Earth is dark.

The illuminated part
Yes, but it is not a "direct source" of its light. The Moon, like the Earth, is illuminated by the light of the Sun. The moonlight that we see is simply the part of the sunlight that is reflected by the lunar surface. This is easily seen by the phases of the Moon, when only part of the Moon's lighted surface is visible from Earth, and we cannot see the non-illuminated portion.During an eclipse of the Moon, the Earth is directly between the Sun and the Moon, so very little light makes it to the Moon. When there is a new moon phase, the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth, so we cannot see any of the illuminated part of the Moon.
It means that only part of the Moon is illuminated by the Sun.
