If you want to keep your computer in good shape and keep it up to date, secure, and clean then you should follow the steps that I give on this page. Cleaning UpThis is a big part of having a clean and speedy computer. There are a few good tools that come with Windows which are called Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup. These tools are very reliable and can increase the speed of a computer drastically.

To locate these tools simply go to the Start Menu - > Accessories - > System Tools. And both of them are located in that menu. I suggest running the Disk Cleanup first and then running the defragmenter.

There are plenty of other downloadable tools that can be found all over the internet. A tool that is definitely worth the mention is a Registry Cleaner. This increases the speed of loading for computers drastically.

There is also a type of maintence that you should do at least once every 6 months which is probably kind of scary to some of those that are new to computers. It's actually a very simple procedure and that is.. cleaning out your computer of dust. If you don't clean out the dust in your computer it could cause parts to overheat.

You can simply take the cover off your computer and use an air compressor or something like that to clean out the dust but make sure that you don't touch any parts in the computer with ANYTHING unless you absoultely know what you're doing. You could mess up parts of your computer.

Wow, such a big question; where to start? Much of the answer depends upon how you will use you computer. If you never ever plan to connect to the internet and have very trusted friends there is little you should ever need to do. HOWEVER if you will EVER connect to the Internet you must understand that the 'Information Highway' is a trashy place to cruise and you will need 'Protection' even if you think you will never surf to a bad site, grab a bad download, and have trusted friends. Good protection, the very BEST will cost you a bit of money but GOOD protection is easily found for Free.

The VERY FIRST thing you should take care of is to ensure you have the most recent OS whether that be Microsoft's products, Apple or Linux or BSD. Seek an update and accept them all. Such updates are provided by your software OS to plug the various holes that have been uncovered. So, please plug up these holes to eliminate the known security problems.

Viruses and Spyware or Malware travel all over the net and if you are connected to the internet by Broadband the chance of an infection is great with the probability of getting sick occurring within 4-5 minutes in many cases. Check with your Internet service provider to see if they offer a free set of programs to protect your PC. If there are none available I suggest you "Google' for a "Free Antivirus". Just type "free antivirus" (with the quotes) within your Google search window and take a download of either AVG Free, Avast free or Avira free from download.com, a trusted site with prescreened programs. Some of these free programs are easier to use than others and you can try them all out if you wish but do so using only one at a time as they may conflict with one another. If you wish to try out a different one first remove the one you are using at the time. You can set up your own configuration or just use the defaults; either way, let the program rum a scan for you before proceeding to do anything other.

After grabbing an antivirus program seek next a free spyware program in a similar way. That is to say, use Goole search for "free spyware". You will find many free programs on the search page, and I'll suggest Spybot, Windows Defender or Ad Aware by lavasoft. As before get the download from a trusted provider such as download.com and run the program. Now again 'google' for a "free firewall" if the Antivirus and Spyware programs you selected did not include a Firewall. A good Firewall should alert you to programs seeking to collect information as well as alert you when you are sending personal information. Most Firewalls need some configuration on your part to describe the kind of Personal Information you wish to protect, but the configuration is usually straight forward and easily completed.

Some people are concerned about 'cookies' but in my experience there is no real need to be concerned for the presence of cookies accepted when you surf unless you plan on visiting the dark side.

A suggestion you should consider is to use the Firefox browser, although IE has come a long way cleaning up it's act. Firefox is an innovator that has pushed along the development of IE in my opinion and it still stands out as a champion for the user. If you are a Windows user, you will still have to keep IE around for the Windows Updates (Patch Tuesdays) so employ both but use Firefox as your default browser.

Your question seems larger than my answer and there are still other matters you should tend to from time to time. Periodically, perhaps once a month, you should run a spyware and virus full scan just to be sure nothing has come aboard your system. I would also suggest you run a disk clean up and defragment once a month. There are still other things you might consider if you are a bit PC savvy such as a Registry Cleaner but such is not really necessary in my opinion.

No doubt there will follow other posters who wish to add or modify some of what is suggested herein, and certainly more can be said. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid); if all is made too complex and redundant the User is more inclined to shuck it all and go Naked or so I think.

If the question you are referring to, is how do you take Care of a computer, it is very simple... here are a few things you can do!

WINDOWS:

1: install an anti virus, i recommend AVG, or AVAST

2: every 1-2 months take your computer outside, and dust the inside

3: Download Tuneup utilities for faster speed

4: i recommend reformatting your computer every 2 years, if you don't know how to do it yourself, bring it to a computer store, and they'll charge ruffly 60$ for it

5: every 6 months run Windows Disk Defrag, (search in start menu)
